"...BLACKWELL, Garnett H...My Dad, Garnett Blackwell, Sunday, August 11, 2013 in the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia. Dad served onboard the USS Chandeleur (AV-10) during WWII, sailed back into San Francisco after the war was over, and got honorably discharged after arriving in San Francisco. A true hero. I am a Navy Retiree myself after 20 years service, transferring to the Fleet Reserve in 2001. I sailed into harms way many times, but after reading the history of USS Chandeleur (AV-10), the crew sure went through some tough times at war!..." He was a Blimp crewman before going aboard the USS Chandeleur (AV-10). I never knew him, but I do know he was aboard the USS Bennington (CV-20). I served on the same ship 20 years later. I just would like to know if anyone knew him or served with him. Also, I would like to know what VP squadrons were assigned to NAS Alameda, California from 1963 to 1965. DAVIES, William M. wdavies1@twcny.rr.com "...Astonished and thrilled to find the USS Chandeleur (AV-10) Site. I was stationed at the Philidelphia Mothball fleet through 1960. Initially I was sent to Green Cove Springs FL (Mothball Fleet)- shortly afterward that base was closed and many of us were sent to the Philadelphia shipyard. I am now sure that it was the USS Chandeleur (AV-10) that was our living quarters during that time which I clearly remember being a sea plane tender. I arrived at Philadelphia as a fireman and left as a Draftsman Illustrator 3rd Class. From the Mothball Fleet, I was then transferred to the USS Taconic (AGC-17) which was a Flag Ship for the Amphibious force..." [22MAY2003]
